Money and costs in California
California can be an expensive place to travel. Allow for sales and lodging taxes, customary tips, park fees, tolls and fuel when comparing costs. Hotel prices should include mandatory resort or amenity charges, while government taxes and optional extras can still increase the final total.
Sales tax, tips, and added fees
California's statewide sales-tax rate is 7.25%, with local district taxes increasing the total in many places. Use the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration's address lookup for the applicable rate. Sales tax is commonly added at checkout rather than included in shelf prices; allow for it on taxable meals, shopping and other purchases.
Tipping is customary: roughly 15–20% at sit-down restaurants, a dollar or two per drink at bars, and a few dollars for housekeeping and valets. Check whether a restaurant already applies a service charge. California requires hotels to include mandatory resort or amenity fees in advertised prices; government taxes and optional services can be separate. Restaurants and bars have a specific exception allowing clearly disclosed mandatory charges wherever prices are shown, so read the menu and bill before adding a tip.
Parks, tolls, and getting around
California State Parks such as Point Lobos, Emerald Bay and Julia Pfeiffer Burns generally charge for day-use parking, with reservations and current access rules varying by park. ReserveCalifornia handles camping, lodging, tours and selected day-use reservations. Federal national parks have separate fees: the 2026 America the Beautiful annual pass costs $80 for US citizens and residents or $250 for non-US residents. Yosemite and Sequoia & Kings Canyon also apply a $100 nonresident fee per visitor aged 16 or older unless covered by an eligible pass. Compare the current pass rules for your party; a pass does not replace a required reservation.
Bay Area bridges collect tolls electronically; the Golden Gate Bridge charges southbound toward San Francisco. Confirm your rental company's toll arrangement and service fees before driving. A short-term license-plate account can cover bridge crossings if you do not use the rental plan, but it cannot cover express lanes. Fuel can be a substantial cost on long coastal and Sierra drives, so include it in your route budget.
Lodging and seasonal pricing
Room rates swing hard with season and location. Napa and Yountville peak during the fall harvest, Palm Springs peaks in the mild winter and spring and discounts in the hot summer, and Lake Tahoe splits between winter ski rates and summer lake rates. Coastal towns like Carmel, Mendocino, and Santa Barbara command a premium on summer and holiday weekends.
Booking well ahead for peak periods, traveling midweek, and considering shoulder seasons can reduce lodging costs. Compare the final total for your dates, including government taxes, parking and any optional extras, and read the cancellation terms before booking.
